New Mexico

I went to Georgia O’Keefe’s Ghost Ranch in New Mexico this last summer to learn to paint plein air (that’s French for painting outside). The trip was wonderful and I feel as though I learned more in those 10 days than I have in some of my semester long classes. Here are a few sketches that I painted while I was there. In the next week or two I will post the two finished paintings that were on display at the CVA gallery.

Last semester I painted Emma posed as the Girl with the Pearl Earring the resemblance between the girls is amazing.

This semester I needed to do a portrait using flat brushes, no blending and only four colors of paint, plus white.  The restrictions seemed daunting at first, but I couldn’t be happier with the results.  Ryan has been turning heads in the painting studio.  He goes up in the hallway this week.
